As a group we created a location recce which reassured us that our location targeted our audience and would create interesting surreal shots supporting our ideas.
It is important for me and my group to have a call sheet in which we can issue to each member and every actor. This will inform everyone of where and when they should report for a particular day of shooting. The call sheet is also useful for contact information of our group and the actors including the schedule for the day. Additionally our call sheet can show transport arrangements, safety notes and whether they will need to bring lunch to the venue.
Here is our call sheet created by a member of my group (Kiera): Using Microsoft Excel we were able to manage our call sheet and present all the information, transferring it to Microsoft Word was effective as it looked professional. In addition by first producing work on Excel I had a immediate backup, if we lost our call sheet.
Here is the example of our call sheet:
Using call sheets was helpful as we could be organised and ensure shooting our music video would run smoothly.
Here is the song we are using in our music video, we chose it as it was surreal and abstract supporting our ideas and target audience: aged 13-21 and 'indie/alternative' genre.
Here are the lyrics to UFO by the Poppy and the Jezebels: Here we were out of nothing, into nowhere-land Fortuna 4000 Fate falls in our hands Make mountains from moondust with people from Mars Engines are drumming, in time with the stars
A powder filled UFO explodes across your shirt 'Coz everything has turned to dust, don't take off it won't hurt A powder filled UFO is crushed between your teeth The future's so last century, it's all beyond belief
Celestial circles come swirling... under our feet Lingering luminous Lethally sweet.. these heavenly heights we like to call home Shine silver light, through crystals of chrome
A powder filled UFO explodes across your shirt 'Coz everything has turned to dust, don't take off it won't hurt A powder filled UFO is crushed between your teeth The future's so last century, it's all beyond belief
Imagination...Risk assessment...we better stay at home Imagination...Crash position...underneath the dome
A powder filled UFO explodes across your shirt 'Coz everything has turned to dust, don't take off it won't hurt A powder filled UFO is crushed between your teeth The future's so last century, it's all beyond belief
Here is my email I sent to several people asking whether they would be available to take part in our music video when we start filming, this was beneficial so as a group we could cast our actors and start filming our ideas immediately.
Below is an example of one of the emails the actors sent back agreeing to participate:
After receiving replies from the email saying each person would be interested. As a group we discussed our casting decisions, this was beneficial as we could see if their description reinforces our decisions and whether we could find any more ideas from their natural appearances.
Lead Girl- Joanna Middleton
Rabbit- Jordan Haywood
Chorus 1- Emma Green
Chorus 2- Becky Green
Chorus 3- Katie Wall
Chorus 4- Emma Walker
I am happy with our actors as they are all excited and willing to participate increasing the success of our music video. The variety of their appearances is beneficial in achieving interesting proxemics and shots. As we have 6 actors we can focus our direction closely and achieve our target audience effectively.
As you can see from this email Poppy and the Jezebels management agrees for us to use their song 'UFO.'This allows me and my group to use their music enabling full preparation and success of our initial ideas.
This was the email from Mark of Lab Records giving us permission to use Portia's song. This was important for our group as it gave us more confidence in our music video ideas knowing we had a definite back up.
In order to gain permission to use both our first and second choice of song we had to ask their management or the actual band for permission. I managed to obtain Dom's mobile number-a members of Poppy and the Jezebels, I asked her if we would be able to use their song UFO for our music video, she agreed and presented other songs we could use of the band e.g Rhubarb and Custard although after discussion our group still thought UFO supported our ideas the best.
Another member of my group (Natalie)then emailed Poppy and the Jezebels management so we could have proof of their agreement this is the email she sent: She also emailed our Portia Conn's management our second choice in case our first said no, here was the email:
I also researched 'Poppy and the Jezebels' as their music attracts our audience and we feel would make our music video a real success. Poppy and the Jezebels music creates a sound that surrounds you of intriguing edgy pop and danceable Indie. Exuding energetic indie/alternative music they instinctively appeal to our target audience, I also like that they are a female band as from our research most indie music is mainly lead by male bands, this adds originality to our music video immediately. Born in Birmingham this enables an accessible music video as they are easy to contact if need be. They are also quite a well known up and coming band with The Guardian calling them 'clever, intriguing, funny and devastatingly cool;' and the Independent on Sunday- ''Poppy and the Jezebels have an exceptional ability that is beyond their years.' For the soundtrack to our music video we have decided to use their song 'UFO'. This song is diverse, stimulating and imaginative effectively capturing an absurd 'Alice in wonderland' quality we are aiming to achieve. This upbeat song also supports our ideas for fast paced random shots creating the surreal effect.
Their facebook and myspace page provided us with more ideas for our music video which would support their song 'UFO' and provide permission for their music http://www.myspace.com/poppyandthejezebels
I researched 'Portia Conn' as her music supports our target audience and would attract consumers to our music video.
17 year old Portia Conn creates entrancing pop/indie music capturing the attention of two record labels LAB Records (UK) and Tragic Hero Records (US) to whom she signed a worldwide deal in 2009. Her debut single 'I Don't Care,' was released through these labels on February 2nd and is supported by another beautifully sombre lyrical genius 'Sandwich Shop.'
After much discussions and detailed research we decided 'Portia Conn' would be slightly less effective for the music video we are creating, although her music supports our genre it is more relaxed and mellow and wouldn't support our surreal fast paced music video. This provided a backup track , this was important in case Poppy and the Jezebels wouldn't give us permission to use their song or we wanted to change our ideas.
In order to make our music video successful and target our 'indie/alternative' student target audience, we had to design a Treatment. Treatment is used throughout the standard industry as a term for a written proposal. It is a narrative description of the production that the client will read before embarking on an idea.
Here is our own treatment for our music video production, underlining what we are proposing to do and how we will do it:
I have designed a table for my production schedule. These dates our mainly individual to my own planning therefore I will need to discuss further details with my group so we can correct any time management problems.
Comparing the initial ideas mind map and my final ideas mind map you can see that the majority of our in inital ideas have still been chosen for our final music video. However after further discussion in my group we decided to revert our ideas from the 'following the band' idea similar to Mumford and sons music video to a more abstract video e.g Florence and the machine, as we feel this is more inspirational and targets our indie/alternative audience better. Final mind map ideas:
