Research- EMI

I researched 'EMI' so I could increase my knowledge of the music industry in order to make my music video a success, I could also see how this company attracts my target audience.

Here is an example of one of EMI's music videos:

Research- Cross-media advertising

Cross media advertising means advertising through 'multi media' e.g publication, radio, Internet, television and mail (i.e newsletters.) Using cross media advertising is beneficial as artists can achieve more publicity and therefore more success and they target a wider audience e.g people who don't listen to the radio but watch TV. However cross media advertising is also negative as it can be expensive and isn't avliable to most unsigned artists. Me and my group will be using cross media advertising when we create a DigiPack- publishing, advertisement-publishing and music video- TV. We won't advertise using mail as this isn't as popular for our target audience and not many students read newspapers so we won't use this media either. The internet would be benefical as it would target our age range e.g youtube for are music video or facebook as this social networking site displays music advertisements.

Convergence- this means to combine two or more media technologies. I have used convergence when I used a video feature on a digital camera, uploaded my animatic onto youtube and took several photos on a phone. This helped my cross media advertising as I could combine different technologies to increase the effectiveness of the product. HMV are selling a Ministry of Sound workout DVD, this provides music and exercise together this is a good example of cross media advertising.Through my research I also found technological convergences are advancing too, for example you can now get a phone with the ability to call people and take videos and pictures, here is an image of the DVD below:

Here is an example of a band Iglu &Hartley that uses Cross-Media advertising:
They use ring tones as a way to listen to their music:

They also use Merchandise as another media advertising resource:

They use the Internet to publish all information and musical context on their myspace:http://www.myspace.com/igluandhartly, this is one of the most persuasive cross-media advertising.

Here is their music video a cross media advertisement:

iTunes are also used as a cross media advertisement where you can pay to download their songs. Here is another cross-media advertisement, their Digipack:

I think this is the strongest cross-media advertisement: It is a magazine advertisement of the band as the fonts really persuasive and the colour scheme is striking while the image is innovative.

Research- New media being used

After researching institutional context, I have discovered that technology is constantly advancing to support new audiences. I have researched several new media technologies I will be using in my music video, using these new technologies is effective as we can ensure a professional final product and target our audience (aged 13- 21 most likely students who listen to indie/alternative music.)

iMovie:

"Maybe you want to throw together a few video clips. Maybe you have more time and want to fine-tune every edit. Or maybe you just want to flip through clips the way you flip through album covers in iTunes. iMovie lets you do it all — then share it all." This is an interesting quote which shows the process and engagement of audiences attraction to iMovie. I think iMovie will be effective for my music video because it allows users to create movies from a variety of file sources. The sources can include digital video cameras, DV-encoded movie files or a collection of pictures. The final result can be written to DVD, CD, DV camera or saved as a file.

iMovie will let me:

  • Easily import footage from camcorders or digital cameras with video footage.
  • Edit, share and organise my footage.
  • Create files that include music, sound effects, themes, titles and transitions.
  • Share my music video on the Internet form sources e.g YouTube or Mobile Me Gallery.
Overall I am really excited to use iMovie for it's high quality features especially editing which will help make my music video a success.

Sony A1E:

Another new media technology I will be using is the Sony A1E."Sony's smallest lightest yet professional HDV camera." "Boasting an incredibly small size, and providing HDV with the 1080i standard, the HVR-A1E offers a host of advanced features for professional use. Using technology such as CMOS means the HVR-A1E is an ultra-compact camcorder capable of providing HDV in full 1080 line resolution."

The Sony A1E will:

  • Provide professional ability with the flexibility to choose any format that suits me and my group giving us a vast amount of effects.
  • With it's wider Dynamic range and anti smear features I will achieve high quality shots.
  • I will achieve high sensitivity and high speed.
  • It also produces low noise making the actual production a lot more efficient.

I feel this new media technology will be very effective for my group particularly as it will heighten the quality of our music video making every shot accurate, it also has many effects including 'black and white' supporting our initial ideas and target audience tastes.

Photoshop:Me and my group are also using Photoshop an excellent new media technology which will enable us to achieve a professional Digipack and the magazine advert. As I am familiar with Photoshop from my AS coursework I can compare my AS magazine cover, understanding the success of the cover to it's target audience, this will enable me to improve and successfully target my magazine advert to out audience i.e indie/alternative genre of music aged between 13-21 most likely students. Posted below is my AS Magazine Cover made on the New Media technology Photoshop. Here is a screen shot of how I will use some of the tools in Photoshop: as you can see I am using the ‘lasso’ tool to change the colour of my background to orange.

Photoshop will allow me to:

  • Explore the different ranges and effects available to support my music video style and target my audience.
  • Achieve a professional effect.
  • Create striking and eye catching results which will grab the target audience attention.

Below is a image of a tool bar for Photoshop, understanding all the tools for this software was important in producing an effective final advertisement.

Here is another screen shot using Photoshop reinforcing it's accessibility and popularity, this is important as we know we are using a professional new media technology.

Overall I think media technologies have developed at a fast pace. This benefites our music video as I feel it wouldn't be as effective if designed a couple of years ago as the target audience would have been completely different and my new media technologies wouldn't be available.

Research- Institutional context

I researched the media as an institution so I could see how this effects my target audience i.e aged 13-21 who watch indie/alternative music videos.

The media is pervasive like air all around us, impossible to avoid; the music industry supports this where as a society we are consumed daily by a variety of different genres of music in different technologies. By understanding the media as a constitution and it's advances towards the music industry, I increased my knowledge improving any initial ideas towards our music video. I displayed my research on Microsoft word creating clarity.

Research- BARB

BARB is the 'Broadcasters Audience Research board' this was useful so I could see what channels are the most popular on TV why, and how they compare to my target audience.

From looking at these result 'Viva' is the most weekly viewed channel with 1,555. This channel is effective because it has a vast target audience and many genres of music. This contrasts with my student target audience and indie genre of music for my music video.

Research- Target audience further

"Audiences are not blank sheets of paper on which media messages can be written, members of an audience will have prior attitudes and beliefs which will determine the effects"Abercrombie 1996. This shows that after researching similar texts, I know my potential target audience will be teenagers/students ranging from 13-21 year olds who are interested in mainly indie music as my video focuses on this type of genre, however I also know other audiences might be persuaded by my music video if they have prior attitudes or beliefs which support my video.

Here are some demographics to explain the increase of music video's been viewed on the Internet:
Students are spending twice as much time on their computers as compared to television viewing 33% of 18-24 year old students have increased their consumption of websites or user-generated videos since last year, and 30% of 18-30 year olds report frequent video viewing on social networking sites
61% of students are watching movies on computers vs. 76% on their television.

I have encouraged my target audience to be consumers of my music video from:
1. The representation and understanding of the target audience, this ensured a successful music video- marketing strategy e.g. focusing on selling the music video to students who are interested in ‘indie’ music, thus recognising the different social, attitudinal, lifestyle and income changes for students; therefore the magazine is marketed to find an accurate audience. The marketing strategy could include launches, advertising, press and media packs, giveaway and competitions, mobile services, websites and fan sites and conventions.
I also shaped my music video to meet the expectations of my audience through my knowledge of their data. For example :
  • Their values- by acknowledging the importance of the values the audience are concerned with- e.g. Using the latest software e.g iMovie to achieve high quality sound, camera shots, editing and mise-en-scene..
  • What they identify with- e.g. people see themselves belonging to certain social groups e.g. individualists/ aspires/ interest in fashion.
  • Their consumption habits are: Lifestyle- socialising/ listening to music/ going to gigs and festivals/ following the ‘indie’ fashion- messy hair, vintage clothing etc.

2. I also used demographic research to target my audience:
· Is everything it advertises suitable for the age and gender.
· Are competitions advertised with the video appropriate for the age and gender.
· Are the key actors or bands correct for the age and gender
· Is the content/ personalities in which the audience follow correct for their age and gender.
· Is the price of the Digipack affordable for the age and gender.

Research- Target Audience

Through carrying out my research , I believe my target audience are teenagers/students aged between 13-21 who like viewing an indie/alternative genre of music.
I began further research into my target audience by researching similar products to that audience. I carried out my research on the NME website as I found this website suits the target audience and genre of my initial ideas.
here are some example:

This video targets my audience because of it's unique and diverse ideas, the band 'The Maccabees' also reinforces the indie genre of music created. Initial the video starts with snap shot of each character, the use of the young boy miming the words creates mystery, the close up shot of the coin spinning is also creative. I think the tension created in the beginning of the video is skillful where the audience wait to see whats going to happen. The music synchronises with the images when they both speed up and we see a closeup of the boys heartbeat again building tension. Then we see flashes in the background where the actors are slowed down. I really this editing skill and feel it would be beneficial to have a similar idea for my music video. The shot of the TV flashing is strong used throughout I like how they leave this as a lasting image, I really want to add something similar to this in my music video as it's powerful. This video is an excellent example of how you can use actors instead of the actually artist and it will still by effective. I think my target audience would admire this video and therefore I will take some ideas as inspiration so my target audience like mine.

This video is great for expressing the possibilities of having a simple video that focuses on different shots of objects and location, the first shot of the calender flicking is fascinating followed by quick sharp shots of transport, people walking and the location. I feel my target audience would like this effect and therefore consider using it in my video. This video uses mostly 'point of view' shots, this attracts the audience as they feel part of the video e.g walking down the escalator and houses flashing by. I like the clips of the band performing however don't feel this video represents my target audience as much as my other examples so would only use occasional ideas shown here.

This video is very suitable for my target audience the beginning shot of the band lying on the floor wrapped in wires it distinctive, the outfits are unusual supporting the 'indie' target audience. Although the lighting works here, I wouldn't use it in my video as I would like the mise-en-scene to create a more 'grunge', 'dusty' and 'dark' effect supporting the genre. The clip of the band performing here is more prominent than the videos above this is much more effective and so would look at this video for the effect here. The tin foil used at the end is a good prop to use as it creates a more striking effect and adds to the up beat mood, the sparklers at the end hold our attention against the dark lighting. Overall the music video is quite similar to something I hope to achieve and definitely targets my audience.

This video depicts an example of one effect I would like to use in my music video, as through my research my target audience thought 'black and white' was very effective and I feel this reinforces the 'indie' genre . This video uses live footage to the highest quality, again I would like to use this in my video I also like how it cuts to the band 'off screen' where they are more natural. Overall this video supports my target audience.

This represents 'indie' music videos, again it reinforces my idea of the 'black and white' effect. I like the starting shot of the band standing in a line as this captures our attention I also like the poses and different levels as they are interesting. I like the close up shot of one member of the band with his hand in his pocket, and the faces of the members of the band. I also like the final shot where they walk into the camera. Overall the mise-en-scene here is appropriate to what a want to achieve in my video as I feel it creates a 'indie' vibe to it.

Although I feel this video is representative to my target audience, I don't feel the mise-en-scene is as representative in my other videos to what I want to achieve. However I feel the editing technique of all the shots crowded against each other is effective and would like to have some shots similar to this. I also like how the shots are formed almost like a photo frame, this is alluring.

As I have analysed before this video is one of the most effective for supporting my target audience, it contains interesting shots, location and shows how we could use actors or a band to support my target audience.

Whilst also researching similar products to my target audience,I have researched contrasting videos to show the exact expectations and effects towards my target audience.

This video uses the 'black and white effect' however the music genre is completely different to my target audience. I also feel the layout and content of the video contrasts with my audience as it has a choreographed dance to RnB style music.

This video again doesn't support my target audience through the different genre of music and mise-en-scene. However I feel the editing technique where shots are slowed down to achieve a 'backwards' effect is really creative and innovative, I feel this is definitely an effect we could use in our video but change it slightly to suit our target audience, e.g have the band walking backwards.

Research- HMV website

I researched on the website the best selling albums; here you can see a wide range of genres of music and target audiences. I also found out that the majority of CD’s in bestsellers were about £8, this is beneficial as I would make my Digipack a similar price so it would be popular. As you can see each album cover differs depending on it's genre of music, as our genre is indie/alternative we will be designing a DigiPack cover similar to 'Florence and the Machine-Lungs' album In contrast the JLS cover promotes their 'pop' genre with all four of them as the main image again appealing to it's specific audience.

Here is a link to the HMV website where I researched information on dvd Digipacks, this was beneficial so I could see what music consumers were interested in and why they were effective.http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?ctx=-1;5;-1;-1;34&pGroupID=5&pSubGroupID=34

Research- Focus group

I designed a live video questionnaire as part of my research so I could achieve an accurate target audience and successful music video. I asked several people in both genders so my results were reliable. I asked whether they preferred black and white music videos or coloured this was important so I could see what effects were popular and would be successful in my video. I then gave them an example of several Digipacks and asked them to state their favourite and why.

After recording my live questionnaire from a 12.5 digital camera I then presented the videos from my camera to a computer. My initial idea of how to create a high quality sequence of the clips I had produced into one video involved using 'Windows Movie Maker.' This was beneficial as I could edit out any unnecessary sound or laughing and also choose the appropriate participants to involve. From this I put together each individual clip into one large video (roughly 6 minutes.) Although 'Windows Movie Maker' was effective in creating this, blogger was too slow to upload. Therefore I decided to try uploading it on YouTube, to do this I had to create an account and then upload the video. This was successful and much more efficient. I have learnt that next time I create a video to edit in 'Windows movie Maker' but upload in Youtube as this is the easiest and best way.

Here is the video I created:

As you can see even though several more people preferred coloured videos the reason behind their opinions didn't support my target audience or my genre of music for my music video. Therefore as my target audience is mainly people who are interested in 'indie' music, the black and white effect supports this as one of the candidates said. Through looking at this survey my group and I might decide to use both effects but mainly focusing on 'black and white' as this supports the indie genre of music.

We also gave several examples of Digipacks and asked which one was their favourite and why.

Every single person we asked liked one of the examples given showing they were all effective, however the majority of people chose the green Digipack with the cartoon "Oi!" image, as it stands out, is bold but not too complicated with only too colours. Most males liked this one and most females choose the calligraphy simple style without any images on it. So for our Digipacks to support our target audience we would try to combine all positive qualities in each Digipack e.g the neat and simple font, the 'indie' feel from the mysterious and artistic images and bold colours.
I am happy with my results and feel the focus group has enabled me to achieve an effective target audience and music video. It was also beneficial to see the reasons behind people's opinions e.g 'black and white' music videos are artistic and original and the audience can connect with them more.

Research- Observations

In order for me to ensure a correct target audience and genre for my music video I decided to observe what consumers look for in music stores. In apple iTunes I asked what the top 10 albums are, these are my results:
Top 10 Albums
1
Contra (Bonus Track Version), Vampire...
2
Animal, Ke$ha
3
The Fame, Lady GaGa
4
Soldier of Love, Sade
5
Ocean Eyes, Owl City
6
The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies), B...
7
Battle Studies (Deluxe Version), John...
8
The Best of Sade, Sade
9
The Element of Freedom (Deluxe Versio...
10
The Love Uncompromised EP, Jason Castro

I then continued my research to WHSmiths as it was important to consider research from less known and more individual music stores. Here are my results:

1. Paolo Nutini - Sunny Side Up - CD

2. Andre Rieu - Vienna Forever - CD

3. Susan Boyle - I Dreamed a Dream - CD

4. Fleetwood Mac - Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac, The - CD

5. Justin Bieber - My World - CD

6. Florence & the Machine - Lungs - CD

7. SEAL - Hits - CD

8. Alicia Keys - Element Of Freedom, The - CD

9. Paul McCartney - Good Evening New York City - CD

10. Saturdays (The) - Wordshaker - CD

To finish off my research I went to Amazon an Internet source so I could compare results online to ones in the shops here are my results:

1.Akron Family - Set Em' Wild, Set Em' Free

2.Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue

3.Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

4.Dananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone

5.Editors - In This Light and On This Evening

6.Eels - Hombre Lobo

7.Fanfarlo - Reservoir

8.Florence + the Machine - Lungs

9.God Help the Girl - God Help the Girl

10.Kiss - Sonic Boom

Through my observations I gathered Amazon and WHSmiths have more original and distinctive music tastes and iTunes has more up to date, modern, chart hits. This shows each music distributor is different as it each has a different target audience, I think iTunes have the closest music results to what supports the ideas for my music video and it's target audience, therefore I would look at their music videos for inspiration.

Research- Music video titles

I researched the titles on professional music videos so I could create ideas for my title on my music video. On 'sky' I watched several music channels and took photos using my digital camera of the titles, as you can see each title is different to each channel stating that depending on the genre of music the title design will vary. This is important as I need to target an 'indie' genre so I will focus on the example below that best suits this.

This title is interesting as it is '1 lined' and only says the artist 'sade', this isn't as persuasive and doesn't provide much information, this could reflect the channel as it was 'Mojo' directing at older audiences the creator might have presumed audiences would already know most of the information. I like the 'bubble' around the 'now' it's effective and eye catching I would consider using this effect.

This title is '3 lined' displaying the artist, song and album name, this is clear and would persuade the reader, I like the colour as it would stand out and the font is simple yet effective. The music channel is of a 'indie' genre- MTV rocks, supporting my genre.

The title for this music video is my favourite I like the 'swirling' effect as it's vibrant and would attract a variety of audiences, the titling is plain with a black box this makes the white font stand out, I am most likely to use titling similar to this as I think it's the most persuasive to students and an 'indie' genre.

This next titling is plain and simple providing the '3 lines' again, I like the blue box as it's very memorable, the font would reinforce my 'indie' genre of music.

Research- Advertisement publishing

I researched some professional publishers so I could see how effective their work was and get any inspiration for my advertisement.
I like the green earthy feel to this advertisement, I also like the typography where it uses an elegant curly font to imitate the vines. I also like how the green and the leaves symbolise not just the name of the band but also literally 'vines', I think this is very effective and creative, it also reflects our target audience i.e. students who watch indie/alternative music videos.

I like the simplicity of this advertisement, although I would use more edgy block style font to toughen up the appeal and support my genre and target audience more. I think the image is strong and the use of location adds a 'indie' feel , I also like the 'vintage' effect through the old fashioned mise- en -scene reinforcing our target audience.

I like this advertisement I like the special effects with the grey clouds giving a sense of mystery, I think the font is trademark to the indie vibe and the white supports the colour scheme in the clouds, I feel this targets our audience as well.

This magazine advert supports my target audience, it's unique and uses high quality effects. I like the freshness to this and the feel of summer through the location and the vibrant colours, the quote "The band of the summer," supports this.

This advert is innovative, the smudged effects give the look of a watercolour or painting effect. The gold old fashioned font adds the 'royal' effect. This advert defiantly stands out and supports my indie /alternative target audience.

Here is an example of a music magazine advert but for a festival, I think this is effective to my target audience, I like the cartoon images of the artist which support the fluorescent vibrant colours . The different fonts are also bold and electrifying. I like how lots of things are happening in this advert it would grab the audience immediately.

Research- Front Cover DigiPacks

Genre:Rock
Artist:Weezer
Comments:This cover is original and creative, I like the image of the dog as I think it is vivid and prominent. The red coloured background supports the outline for the title of the band and the colour of the dog matches the colour scheme of the room. The font for "Raditude"is electrifying with a bright yellow to stand and almost giving a techno effect, this would support our teenage/student target audience. The frame for the cover helps keep everything clear and concise. I like the idea that the image is different and is beneficial to show me I wouldn't have to use actors or a band on my front cover in order to make it a success. It's overall originality reinforces our 'indie/alternative' genre.

Genre:Indie
Artist:Vampire Weekend
Comments:I like the dynamic orange colours which give a vibrant energetic effect. The chandelier is an inventive idea and shows how a cover can look effective without the artist on the front. I like the faint image of people underneath as it gives the idea something more to the cover. The bat wings on the chandelier support the title of the band and promote a surreal feel supporting our music video ideas.

Genre:Indie
Artist:Bombay Bicycle Club
Comments:This cover is extremely reminiscent of an indie vibe, I like the inventiveness of the blue colour with the title "I had the blues but I shook them loose." This is supported by a matching colour frame and a fairly basic but effective font. The image is imaginative where people are looking at someone jumping in the air in the location (park.) I also like the clarity in the cover where the image fits around the text. I also like the black and white effect here as it gives the whole cover a 'vintage' look, reflecting the 'indie/alternative' genre.

Genre:Pop/dance
Artist:Justin Timberlake
Comments: This cover has a sophisticated effect with the smart suit and plain grey background the font supports this through the elegant typography. I like the black, red and grey colours in the font they manage to stand out without clashing. The image is fun and vibrant, the glitter ball lets the consume become aware of 'music' before they even listen to the CD, this doesn't attract our genre so much which was benefical to understand so we could focus on our 'indie' genre.

Genre:Pop/indie
Artist:Daniel Merriweather
Comments:This video supports my 'indie' genre. I like the simplicity of the image juxtaposed against the crowded brash location. The black and white colour scheme is effective for a diverse outcome, the font makes a statement against the image of the artist walking. We could use this video as it looks quite simple yet effective.

Genre:Indie
Artist:Mumford&sons
Comments:This cover supports the bands music video which I chose as my main product for inspiration. I feel it matches my groups ideas, target audience and genre effectively and would be quite easy to create. The font gives the whole image a 'vintage' look which supports the distinctive outfits, the image of the houses reinforces the 'indie' one-of-a kind effect. I also like how the band look like they're manikins in a shop window, overall I feel this cover is successful and rare.

Genre:Indie/Rock
Artist:Kings of Leon
Comments:This cover uses lots of computer graphics, the image is distorted and has several other images created over each other. I like the 'green' effect an the actual concept is extremely diverse, I think the font could have been bigger to draw the consumer in however the image makes such a statement it achieves this immediately. I think this cover is a bit too complicated for our music cover and doesn't follow our main ideas, so wouldn't use this as inspiration.

Genre:Pop
Artist:Leona Lewis
Comments: This cover is suitable for a pop genre and for a teen audience though I don't feel it would be very suitable for my ideas in my music videos. I like the silver colour scheme which creates a sophisticated effect and the typography of the artist is illuminating yet simplistic, the 'Echo' is in the same font but in a grey colour so it fades more.

Genre:Rock
Artist:YeahYeahYeahs
Comments: This is an example of how a central image can be effective, I like the unique element to it and how you could interpret it in my ways, this would target a vast audience and so could be useful.

Genre:Indie
Artist: Yelle
Comments:I think this image would be achievable for my group as you could have a shot of an actor or band jumping in the air and then use photo shop to achieve the background effects. The shadow under the girl exaggerates the movement and the white colour scheme amplifies the fluorescent font. The target audience her is vast so we could take inspiration from this.

Genre: indie/pop
Artist: Kesha
Comments: This cover is especially inspiring with a glam/grunge theme. I love the glitter of the fonts and how they support the artists makeup. The blue and gold colour is refreshing against the black and white effect. The background has a 'torn' effect where it looks old and messy reinforcing the 'indie' effect. Choosing to have a close up shot of the artist adds a stimulating affect where we are attracted to the eye contact.

Genre:Indie
Artist:One night only
Comments: This matches my ideal target audience and music video genre the most, it also follows our groups initial ideas with 'following a band' because from this long shot you can see the whole band. It also looks accessible to produce where you could use actors instead of band. I think the overall look for this is very effective, the black and slightly dull colours support the indie theme. I also like the white powerful font, the bands name is more bold so its eye catching. I like the background of the image where the band actual look as if they are walking away from the tunnel, overall it achieves an mysterious, creative effect.

Genre:Dance
Artist:Calvin House
Comments: This look is original and appealing with the black and white effect and close up image. The sunglasses are bold here and the silver supports the colour scheme. I think this cover works for it's genre but I don't think it would be as effective for a Rock or Indie genre of music where the target audience is different.

Genre:Pop
Artist:The Saturdays
Comments: This cover shows how you can use costumes and props to create different effects. I like the diverse outfits and the different poses which create different shapes to the image. The font title is unique and we are able to see the artists name in bold. I would prefer the colour of the fonts to be in black so it would stand out against the background, although it does support the comic relief logo. I like the shadow effect produced in the background where the pink colour fades to grey. The age targeted here is similar to our student 13-21 audience so looking at this wold be beneficial.

Genre:Indie/rock
Artist:Thirty seconds to Mars
Comments: This cover is really effective it is a good example of how an image can work even if it doesn't symbolise the title of the CD. I also like how the typography is placed horizontal across the image intriguing you, "mars" and "war" are red whereas the rest is in black this amplifies specific words. I think a strong image like this is effective as it would immediately grab the customers attention and is innovative, this also reflects our target audience.

Genre:RnB
Artist:Rihanna
Comments:I really like the black and white effect, the photo is very striking and the makeup and outfit support this. The 'R' uses a 'space age' typography supporting the modern theme, the title of the album at the bottom is small but still stands out against the dark black, however I feel this cover differs slightly to our target audience and what we hope to achieve.

Genre:Pop
Artist: Mika
Comments:This front cover is complex with it's colourful animations, I like the inventiveness in this and the animations suit the title "life in cartoon motion". The typography reiterates the 3D effect and the white immediately grabs your attention, therefore we might consider this colour scheme as it supports our target audience.

Genre: Dance
Artist: Ministry of Sound
Comments: I like the simplicity of this cover where the Gold background supports the trademark logo, it produces a summery effect and the age range would be similar to ours i.e students.

Research- Music video director research.

'Martin de Thurah' won the Best Director Award 2009 for the Creative Review UK. His video for Carpark North ‘Human’ won the audience award, here is a clip of the video. This video used high quality special effects and editing.

Here is an example of his latest work:

I like his excellent ability to focus on detail, he uses refreshing ideas such as confetti thrown in the air and slow action shots of the falling action of rain so it looks very innovative. He also zooms in on certain movements of objects, this gives a original effect you probably wouldn't normally see without his editing. I also like his variation with mise-en-scene where he works with high and low key lighting to create a different atmosphere and mood.

Through researching his work I found some useful ideas for my music video including a more clear exploration of the possibilities of editing and camera shots to create high quality effects. This added to my ideas targeting our audience and 'indie/alternative' genre of music.

Here is a link to the 'Creative Review UK music award winners' this was beneficial so I could see what video's were effective and see if I could take inspiration from any of their ideas: http://www.creativereview.co.uk/cr-blog/2009/october/uk-mvas

Research- MTV video of the year 2009 nominations

I researched the MTV music video awards so I could see the music video of the year 2009. This was beneficial as I could see what was effective in the winners video and compare it with the other nominations to see how they could improve. This research helped see what I would need to make my music video successful whilst showing what audiences like to see closely looking at my target audience i.e students who watch to indie/alternative music videos.

As you can see all the nominations are of high quality, they each have different effects suiting their target audience and music genre e.g pop/dance for Lady GaGa's uses bright colours and excellent computer graphics.

The winner was : Beyonce- Single Ladies

This video is very simple but effective, the black and white lighting supports the black coloured costumes. The video shows a live performance of her dancing this supports the song being played. I like how the lighting is black one moment and then changes to complete white this gives a 'dream like' effect and supports the 'futuristic' style. The cast of shadows of the dancers amplifies their movements. Overall even though this was the most straightforward video, I like the effortless of it, less is definitely more here.

After analysing all of the nominated videos I decided a simple video could be most effective for my music video, I also prompted the idea of having several shots in our music video in black and white as this is accessible and subtly striking, whilst reflecting our 'indie/alternative' genre of music.

Research- Most inspirational music videos

This video was my groups main stimulus for inspiration, we found the surrealism and abstract effects distinctive and persuasive. After discussion we also decided this would be the most accessible to produce as it could involve actors instead of an actual band and still be effective.
1.
I analysed this video examining the structure and the most effective shots as this would give me more inspiration and ideas for my music video.

2. Mumford&sons- winter winds: this has some good examples of shots for a music video, and reflects our indie/alternative genre of music.

I analysed the video below:
